This is a hardcover book with a transparent round spine. The front and back covers are made from hemp canvas and imitation leather respectively. There is space between the curved, outer spine, made from transparent PVC, and the inner spine. As the light changes, the spine text “GDC Award 21,” silkscreen printed in gold, casts a shadow along the inner spine.
Large, bold fonts heighten the contrast between the text and the paper, making white paper whiter, and the black text blacker, reshaping the reading experience on the page as reading itself is transformed by new mediums.
This collection of works from the 2021 GDC Awards is arranged chronologically in the order of “events” (initial selection, jury selection, and grand prize). The same artworks appear multiple times on the timeline, “encountering itself” within the catalogue.
