As the exhibition catalogue, this book extends the viewing experience of the exhibition into the act of reading, using paper, imagery, and layout to rebuild the relationship between viewers and historical artifacts.
The visual design is centered on the spiritual connections between humans, animals, nature, and deities in ancient Mesoamerican cultures. A reddish-brown color palette echoes the tones of clay, ochre, and ancient temple surfaces, while specialty papers with ceramic-like textures bring the traces of time and materiality into the tactile experience of the book. The cover extracts the jaguar motif and transforms it into an abstract graphic language, creating a relationship of concealment and revelation between the pattern and the title, reflecting the symbolic imagination of ancient civilizations.
The interior layout draws inspiration from the rhythm of exhibition viewing. Through image scale, negative space, and page transitions, the reader is guided from an overall observation toward a closer contemplation of details. A unified gray background reduces visual differences between photographic environments, allowing attention to return to the forms, textures, and meanings of the artifacts themselves.
The design seeks to extend the act of viewing beyond the exhibition space, allowing the book to become a medium connecting an ancient civilization with contemporary readers.
